This charming and quaint community on the gulf coast is known for its great cultural events, but also for its breathtaking beaches. One of the most intriguing aspects of this unique beach community is that ancient shark teeth regularly wash up on its shores. Venice is widely known as the shark tooth capital of the world, and has been washing up on their beaches for centuries. It is thought that ancient shark burial grounds are located just off Venice’s shores, resulting in hundreds and hundreds of shark teeth coming into shore. These teeth are generally black, brown or gray and range in size from 1/8 of an inch to 3 inches long. Shelling is also a favorite pastime for Venice residents, and after a storm their beaches are littered with hundreds of shells and teeth.
Venice has four great beaches to visit; Brohard Paw Park, Casperson Beach, Venice Municipal Beach and Nokomis Beach. Brohard Paw Park is a dog friendly beach with drinking fountains, showers, decks, fire hydrants and leash posts for your favorite K-9. This has been called the best dog friendly park in Florida by many and is the only beach area in Sarasota County where dogs may roam free. Casperson Beach is the longest beach in the county and is located just south of Venice Airport. This is the beach to visit if you long for a secluded and unspoiled natural setting and also a great place to look for sharks teeth. In fact, Casperson Beach is the site for the annual Sharks Tooth and Seafood Festival. Venice Municipal Beach is also an ideal location to look for shark teeth, and is visited by divers all over the world for their coral reef, located ¼ mile off shore. Nokomis Beach is considered to be the family friendly beach of the four and is the oldest beach in the county. It is a great place for a barbecue, swimming, shelling, sunning, boating, fishing or just enjoying a day of leisure.
Venice is also an ideal location for boating and fishing enthusiasts because there is water, water, and more water as far as the eye can see! In fact, beautiful waterfront properties are abundant in Venice, making it easy for you to find a beautiful home where you can dock your sea vessel right in your own back yard. This corner of the Gulf of Mexico is notorious for its great fishing, with over 1,000 species living off of Venice’s shores, including red snapper, tarpon, grouper and other game fish.
